Reinhard Schmoeckel (born August 27, 1928 in Berlin ) first worked for a newspaper in Westphalia and then studied law and history in Bonn . He received his doctorate as Dr. jur. and then worked for almost four decades in the federal service in Bonn. Among other things, he worked for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag , for the press and information office and for the offices of the Federal Chancellor and the Federal President . Schmoeckel was, among other things, head of the personal office of former Federal Chancellor Kiesinger for 17 years and, after his death in 1988, of former Federal President Carstens († 1992).

After the deaths of Kiesinger and Carstens, he edited and edited their memoirs. He also wrote a story about the grand coalition from 1966 to 1969 entitled The Forgotten Government . He is also the author of numerous other historical books and novels. One focus here is the possible historicity of the Thidrek saga .
