Reinhold Specht (born June 22, 1893 in Zerbst ; † May 6, 1960 in Berlin ) was a German archivist .

Life

Reinhold Specht was born as the son of a primary school teacher in the capital city of Zerbst in Anhalt and graduated from high school there in 1912. He studied history, German and Latin philology at the universities of Leipzig, Halle-Wittenberg and Heidelberg, but he was not able to finish his studies because he was called up for military service. From 1920 he worked as a teacher, first in Dessau and then in Köthen . In 1924 he got a job at the Francisceum grammar school in his hometown of Zerbst, at the same time he took over the management of the Zerbst city archive from Theodor Schulze . In 1926 he was also appointed head of the Anhalt State Archives in Zerbst. In September 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a reserve officer. When he returned to Zerbst immediately after the end of the war in May 1945, his place of work was burned out in the bombing on April 16, 1945 and numerous valuable archives were destroyed.

Reinhold Specht was arrested by the Soviet occupation forces as a former state servant and Wehrmacht major and imprisoned in Moscow . He did not return from there until 1949 and helped to rebuild an archive in Zerbst from the archived material. The remains of the state archive had meanwhile been transported from the state archive of Saxony-Anhalt to Oranienbaum . In 1952 he received a job offer from the Museum of German History in Berlin, where he last worked as a senior assistant. There he was specifically responsible for head of the development of the documents sector.
