Rembrandtplein
Rembrandtplein is a large square in Amsterdam that was named after the painter Rembrandt van Rijn in 1876 .
history
The square was once the butter market in Amsterdam. 1852 was here in the presence of King Wilhelm III. a statue of Rembrandt was unveiled and in 1876 the name of the square changed from Botermarkt to Rembrandtplein . After the Second World War , the square became the center of nightlife with the opening of various hotels and cafes.
Since Rembrandt's 400th anniversary from 2006 to 2009, there are several smaller statues in the middle of the square in front of the Rembrandt monument, which represent the famous painting by Rembrandt “ The Night Watch ”.
meaning
There are bars, restaurants and a few large discos in the blocks around the square. The place is very popular with tourists and Dutch people. The popularity of Rembrandtplein increases with the café terraces in summer. The largest building on the square is the headquarters of the former Amsterdamsche Bank (later ABN AMRO ).

The Rembrandtplein is connected to the Muntplein via the Reguliersbreestraat . The Amstelstraat leads over the Blauwbrug from the square over the Amstel . The square Thorbeckeplein (named after Johan Rudolf Thorbecke ) south, where the Herengracht continues.

Europe's largest LC screen with a size of 7.60 by 15 meters is located on Rembrandtplein . Pedestrians can interact with the screen using a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. The square is adjacent to the Reguliersdwarsstraat , where the gay community of Amsterdam is primarily represented. From Rembrandtplein to the famous Bloemenmarkt ( flower market ) it is about 230 meters. Close by is the Hendrikje Mug Museum .
