Remistus († September 17, 456 in Classis near Ravenna ) was a Western Roman patricius Germanic (probably Visigothic) origin. Avitus , who had been proclaimed emperor by the western Roman troops on July 9, 455, appointed Remistus patricius and (based on the assumption that as a Teuton he most likely exercised a military function) probably also the first magister militum (army master). As patricius et magister militum, he was the de facto head of government. Remistus was born at Classe a month before the fall of the AvitusRavenna slain on the orders of Ricimer .
