Ren'Py ( Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine ) is a free and freely usable game engine for the creation of visual novels , but also of other software such as text adventures , stories, presentations and animated illustrations.

The origin of the software lies in the English-speaking Manga community and was designed with the idea of being able to design Japanese-style adventures with simple means and to greatly minimize the amount of programming involved in creating them. As open source software, Ren'Py has become a reference engine against which other programs with a similar focus can measure themselves in their capabilities. With Ren'Py , more than 1,200 games have been created so far, mostly across platforms. Based on its manga-friendly subculture, other languages and styles are increasingly being used, and around the tenth anniversary of the program in 2014, a growing number of Ren'Py games and stories can also be found on major commercial gaming platforms such as Steam or Desura . Commercial use is supported by the open MIT license.

You work with the program using simple stage directions that are entered into a text editor. In addition to your own instructions - for example for animating images - Ren'Py programs can also be expanded with the Python programming language .

Word origin

Ren'Py is a suitcase word that was combined from "Ren'ai" and "Python". This refers to the genre of Ren'ai adventure or Ren'ai simulations . " Visual Novels " is also an English word that emphasizes the combination of text with images in this genre and is generally used outside of Japan as a term for Japanese adventure games of this type.

Functions

Ren'Py offers a basic framework for settings such as sound, graphics, savable scores, etc. right from the start. The basic area also includes the display of graphics and branch options / menus. The own command language "ATL" (Animation and Transformation Language) can be used for the animation of graphics, for example character pictures, which greatly simplifies these functions and makes them easier to read and use.

Ren'Py also supports almost all functions that are important for a visual novel without being tied to this genre. Including different text representations, synchronization, rewinding to previous points in a story, a variety of image transitions and more. Ren'Py scripts have a script-like syntax and can also contain elements from the Python code that allow the user to add his own functions.

Multimedia capabilities are made possible internally with the help of pygame . The Python programming language offers a powerful possibility to expand the scripts. Supports are Windows , macOS , Linux ( also in some distributions included ), Android systems such as the Ouya console and iOS .
