North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve

The North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve ( Lat . : Ziemeļvidzemes biosfēras rezervāts) is located in Vidzeme , in northern Latvia on the border with Estonia . It extends over 4,576 km², which is about 6% of the area of Latvia, and includes 51 smaller nature reserves.
In 1990 the Latvian government established a protection zone within the current boundaries of the biosphere reserve with an administration in Salacgrīva , which was officially included by UNESCO on December 11, 1997 as the first biosphere reserve in Latvia.
The North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve is particularly characterized by
- the Salaca , a relatively fast-flowing river with banks of sandstone rocks and caves, especially in the area around the city of Mazsalaca ,
- the largely natural Baltic Sea beach of Vidzeme and
- the Burtnieker See .
Others
The reserve is one of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves .
