René Oberthür

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

René Oberthür (born April 14, 1852 in Rennes ; † April 27, 1944 ) was a French entomologist specializing in beetles .

Life

Oberthür was the son of the Alsatian publisher François-Charles Oberthür , the founder of the publishing house Oberthür. He was also a butterfly collector, and his occupation with insects carried over to his brother Charles Oberthür and his great-nephew Henri Joseph Oberthür . In contrast to his brother, who mainly collected butterflies, he specialized in beetles.

His extensive collection (5 million copies in 20,000 boxes) is mainly (through purchase) at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (and classified there as Monument historique), partly in the Museum König in Bonn and in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale in Genoa.

Like his brother, he used missionaries to collect insects from around the world, supported by the brothers' publishing house. But he also bought large collections such as those of Henry Walter Bates and General Pierre François Marie Auguste Dejean .
