from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rendition, Inc. was a manufacturer of graphics chips in the 1990s. The company's goal was to develop and sell high-quality graphics chips for the low-cost market.

history

Rendition was founded in January 1993 in Mountain View , California and is based there. After several products were brought onto the market under the brand name Rendition Vérité , Rendition was taken over by Micron Technology on September 14, 1998 and incorporated into the company as the "Integrated Technology Group" (ITG). As a result, new graphics chips were announced, but no more products were brought onto the market. Some time later, the development of graphics chips was stopped.

Programming interface

As was common at the time, when there were no standardized programming interfaces (API) for 3D graphics such as Direct3D or OpenGL or these were not yet widespread, Rendition developed its own programming interface in order to be able to exhaust the capabilities of its own hardware. The first was Speedy3D for DOS-based games, which was replaced a short time later by RRedline for Windows . Like 3dfx , Rendition published the specifications for its interfaces in order to increase the distribution among game developers accordingly. The corresponding SDKs are still available from ITG.

The following well-known games have been equipped with a corresponding API from Rendition:

Storage

In 2006, the Rendition brand name was revived by Micron Technology for memory products. These products are designed similar to those of the Crucial brand , but without the additional service of Crucial.
