The Rendsburger Stadtsee is a lake in the city of Rendsburg in the German state Schleswig-Holstein . The lake is about 3.5 hectares and up to 1.5 m deep. The city lake was created in 1893 when the Kiel Canal was built .
history
The city lake goes back to a narrow arm of the Eider that used to run south of the old town, which was called Holstengraben due to its geographical location. The old town itself was on an island or a Werder between the northern main arm of the Eider with the Obereider and the southern Holstengraben. By building a lock , the water level of the Obereider was finally lowered, so that the old town lost its original island location. The lake was completely cut off from the Obereider in 1910 through further construction work. The former island location of Rendsburg can still be recognized today by means of the Ober- and Untereider as well as the city lake.
