Rennibister
The basement of Rennibister on Mainland is one of the best preserved of the 41 existing structures on Orkney , also known as Earth Houses. Most are on Mainland in Scotland , but there are also some on Rousay , Hoy and Eday .
location
The basement of Rennibister is located between Finstown and the island's capital Kirkwall , protected by an iron gate, on a farm on the banks of a bay of O'Firth. The building erected in the 1st millennium before the turn of the times was discovered in 1926.
description
In the case of the basement, a basic distinction is made between "rock-cut", "earth-cut", "stone built" and "mixed" basements. The oval dry masonry chamber, 3.7 m long and 2.5 m wide, in which one can stand upright, has five side chambers and a cantilevered ceiling , the span of which is shortened by the support of four columns (close to the wall). This structure is reminiscent of the so-called "Atlantic round houses". Access was via a 70 by 70 cm wide corridor, which originally started from a wooden round house above ground. Today the entrance, which takes place via a vertical iron ladder, is on the chamber.
Finds
The corridor was filled with rubbish. In addition to soil and shells, the chamber contained the excarnated bones of six adults and twelve children.
Other well-known basements on Orkney are Grain Earth House , Crantit , Newark and Windwick .
