Northern beginning of the Rennweg

The Rennweg is a paved path that crosses the Königsforst near Cologne in a north-south direction. It is blocked for cars. Before the construction of the federal highway 4, it branched off from Frankenforster Strasse. The small section can still be seen today. From Rather Weg, near the Bergisch Gladbach / Bensberg motorway junction, it crosses the Königsforst almost in a straight line for 5 km and continues into the Wahner Heide.

There are two local attempts to explain the name Rennweg :

  1. Numerous mining relics can be found in the Königsforst. In addition to several pits, slag was also found, which suggests prehistoric iron ore mining and smelting. The ore was melted in so-called racing furnaces . The ore runs (runs) during the smelting process. The name Rennweg is therefore often associated with the excavated prehistoric kilns.
  2. The Dukes of Berg often hunted in the Königsforst. For this purpose, the Rennweg was cordoned off on both sides so that the hunted game could not escape to the side. Followed by the hunting party with their dogs, the chased animals then ran through the straight forest aisle until they collapsed from exhaustion.
