Republican principle

The republican principle or Republic of principle under German law a state structure determination in accordance with Article 20 Basic Law and Article 28 paragraph 1 Basic Law . The republican principle obliges the federation and the states to the state and form of government of the republic (as opposed to the monarchy ).

In the same way, Art. 1 of the Austrian Constitution bases Austrian law on the republican principle.

The republican principle anchored in Art. 20 I, 28 I 1 GG prohibits the monarchy as a form of government. There must be no head of state determined by succession. This also applies to the federal states.
