Prop shift

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In narrative research , one speaks of prop shifting when different props or participants appear in a structurally identical text ( fairy tale , saga , legend ) depending on the region or time. In a European fairy tale the wolf can take on the role of the evil and dangerous animal; the role of the tiger in an Indian fairy tale and the lion in an African fairy tale . Something similar can be found for musical instruments, weapons, means of transport and payment, and food.
