from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reserva Natural Serra da Malcata is a 16,348 hectare nature reserve in the Portuguese region of Beira Interior that has existed since 1981 . It is part of the concelhos of Penamacor and Sabugal , near the border with Spain .

In the Serra da Malcata springing Rio Bazágueda , the catchment area of the Tagus belongs. There is a wooded habitat for the extremely rare Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) and its preferred prey, the rabbit , which has been decimated by two epidemics since the 1950s . As the Iberian lynx is almost extinct, there is discussion about its reintroduction into the reserve; a breeding station was established in 1999.

Among the most important protected animal species are the European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) , as well as the small-blotted genet (Genetta genetta) , but also wild boar , red fox (Vulpes vulpes) , deer , squirrels and other mammals. There are also bird species such as the black stork (Ciconia nigra) , which is very rare in Portugal. Almost all Portuguese amphibians are also represented in the reserve.
