  • The UN General Assembly resolution A / RES / 68/262 was adopted on March 27, 2014 as a result of the open vote in the 80th plenary session of the 68th session of the UN General Assembly. This session of the General Assembly was specially convened to deal with the question of the armed occupation of parts of the territory of Ukraine ( Autonomous Republic of Crimea , Sevastopol ) by Russia .

The document was adopted in response to the UN's reaction to the Russian annexation of territories of Ukraine, and it was adopted under the title "Territorial Integrity of Ukraine" . The resolution reaffirmed the UN General Assembly's commitment to maintaining the territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and underscored the invalidity of the Crimean referendum on March 16, 2014.

The resolution was supported by 100 UN member states. Eleven countries ( Armenia , Belarus , Bolivia , Cuba , North Korea , Nicaragua , Russia , Sudan , Syria , Zimbabwe and Venezuela ) voted against the resolution. There were 58 abstentions. 24 states did not take part in the vote due to the absence of their representatives.

The resolution was initiated by Canada , Costa Rica , Germany , Lithuania , Poland and Ukraine.

The adoption of the resolution was preceded by the unsuccessful attempt by the UN Security Council to find a solution to the question of the Crimean crisis . Russia's veto in the Security Council prevented the adoption of a US draft resolution . In this it said that the planned referendum on the accession of the Ukrainian peninsula to Russia "has no validity" and "cannot be the basis for a change in the status of Crimea". The People's Republic of China abstained, 13 of the 15 members of the body approved the US draft.
