Retorsion (international law)

Retorsion in the sense of international law denotes a reaction by a subject under international law (especially a state) with generally permissible means to hostile acts directed against it. Retorsion is therefore a special case of Talion .

Retortions are used in particular in the area of ​​international trade , as codified in the agreements of the World Trade Organization (WTO). In WTO dispute settlement proceedings, the complaining country can be granted the right of retaliation (through trade-restricting measures) against the defendant country.
