The term rescue dog team is standardized according to DIN 13050: It is a team consisting of a rescue dog handler and a rescue dog whose task is to search for and locate missing or buried people . It has a qualification that corresponds to participation in civil protection .

Since the definition according to DIN 13050 is kept very general, the "rescue dog management organizations" ( rescue dog teams ) have created their own rescue dog tests to ensure the quality of the teams.
