The rescue medal of the Duchy of Braunschweig was donated on April 25, 1836 by Duke Wilhelm von Braunschweig . It was given to people who, despite possible self-harm, had excelled in saving the lives or property of others.

The silver medal with a green ribbon was worn on the left side of the chest. It showed on the front a "W" for Wilhelm on a coat of arms, which is carried by lions. On the right and left there are four flags each, above the coat of arms the ducal crown and a star can be seen. Above you can read "Badges of Honor", below the date of foundation. On the back you can see the goddess of victory Nike , standing on a dragon , she is holding a palm frond in her left hand and 8 stars arranged in a circle above her head. All around you can read "Courageous deeds honoring wages".
