The Rescue Medal of the Free City of Danzig was donated on February 18, 1927 by resolution of the Senate and could be awarded to people as recognition for saving a human life at their own risk, regardless of the nationality of the rescuer.

The round medal made of silver shows the Gdańsk coat of arms held by two standing lions in the middle on the front . A star can be seen above the coat of arms , three stylized waves under the coat of arms and the lion, the inscription FREIE • STADT • DANZIG all around and on the reverse the four-line inscription for rescue from danger to life , which is partly surrounded by laurel branches .

This medal was designed by Max Buchholz (1878–1947) and bears his artistic initials "MB".

The award was worn on the ribbon on the left side of the chest.

With the incorporation of the Free City of Danzig on September 1, 1939 into the German Reich , the award of the rescue medal was stopped.
