Rescue knives are special knives for searching and rescuing victims in emergencies with short, sturdy blades , partly saw-ground , acoustic and optical aids (small lights and / or whistles), and rigid or foldable blades. In many cases they have a rounded tip or a rubber-coated tip so as not to injure victims to be rescued. So-called belt cutters are designed in such a way that the cutting edge lies deep in the knife and cannot be accidentally reached. These knives are usually supplemented by a punch or spring punch to be able to shatter panes and thus act as an emergency hammer .

Legal situation in Germany

If it is a one- hand knife (knife with a blade that can be locked with one hand ), special regulations apply in Germany, among other things, regarding the generally prohibited use . The knife is wielded when the actual power over it is exercised outside of one's own home, business premises or one's own pacified property, i.e. also in the car. However, using a one-hand knife is permitted if there is a legitimate interest, u. a. in particular in connection with the exercise of the profession. For certain types of rescue knives, the German Federal Criminal Police Office no longer classifies them as weapons, but as tools.
