Rezan Zuğurli

Rezan Zugurli , also Zuğurlu, (* 1988 in the village of Ziyaret in the Lice district ) is a journalist and a Kurdish politician of the Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi (BDP) party.

Personal

Rezan Zuğurli grew up as the eldest child in a family with eight children. The family had to leave their home village because of the pillage of villages during the clashes between the state and the PKK and went to Diyarbakır. Since the persecution continued there, the family spent another year in Hatay and returned to Diyarbakır to start school with Rezan at the age of six. Rezan was first registered there. Since her parents, İhsan Tanrıkulu and Firuze Zuğurli, were only married according to a religious rite, the six-year-old Rezan was registered in her mother's name.

Rezan Zugurli is married to Uğur Ataş and has one son. In 2010 she studied media studies at Dicle University .

Political career

Rezan Zugurli was elected mayor candidate by the BDP delegates and elected mayor of Lice with 91% of the vote. It was the best result of the local elections and at the age of 25 she was the youngest female mayor in the history of Turkey . In February 2017, the two co-mayors were removed and replaced by a trustee appointed by the Ankara government .

Law enforcement and litigation

In 2011, Rezan Zugurli took part in a demonstration for the prisoners on hunger strike . In 2012 she was arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison. After 13 months, the appellate body dismissed the proceedings and suspended the sentence. In August 2017, the verdict became final and she was arrested. She first sat in Diyarbakır Prison with her 13-month-old child. She was later transferred to T Type Van Prison .
