The Rheinhessen was established on 30 September 1954 with a registered capital of 600,000 DM as a common start-up by the former Stadtwerke Ingelheim and rhenag Rheinische Energie AG in Cologne .

In the first year, 471,000 m³ of water, 1,109,000 m³ of self-generated gas and 5,911,000 kWh of electricity were supplied. In-house gas production was discontinued in 1955 when, following the construction of a new supply line, it was possible to receive long-distance gas from the Ruhr area . In 1967, Rheinhessische acquired the electricity network in Heidesheim am Rhein and, one year later, the network of the then still independent community of Großwinternheim . In 1993 the water supply of the community of Heidesheim was integrated into the Rheinhessische . In return, this became a 7.36% shareholder.
