history

The Rheinmuseum emerged in 1964 from the local history museum founded in 1899. Since then it has been located opposite the town hall in the "Kulturhaus" in the Martini church, initially on the two upper floors. After the city library moved to another building in 1982, the Rhine Museum was able to expand to the ground floor and use this floor in particular for temporary exhibitions and lectures. The archives of the city archive are in the cellar. The museum was operated by the city of Emmerich until 1994.
