Rhizotom ( also: Wurzelgräber or Wurzler , name from Greek : ῥίζωμα rhizoma "rooted" and τομή tomé "cut") is the name of a herb collector in antiquity and the Middle Ages . The foundations of their work were occasionally superstition and alleged witchcraft and sorcery , but they also made decisive contributions to herbal medicine .

Various external influences played a role in collecting the roots , such as the hour of the day or night. Often strange rituals such as dances and prayers , but also obscene utterances, accompanied the search for the plants. For example, collecting mandrake was part of the activity of the rhizotomes, whose search was said to be particularly dangerous.
