Family : Rhopalonematidae
Scientific name
Rhopalonematidae
Russell , 1953

The Rhopalonematidae are cnidarians from the class of the hydrozoans . They are the most species-rich family from the subordination of the Trachymedusae .

features

The manubrium of the Rhopalonematidae is narrow and can be stalked or sessile, the mouth has distinct lips. Usually they have eight, but rarely more, of the narrow radial canals , centripetal canals are absent. The gonads either rest against these and are then spherical or linear or hang down in pockets in the cavity below the screen. The numerous edge tentacles are evenly distributed around the edge of the screen or arranged in groups. The mostly club-shaped sensory organs ( statocysts ) are at the edge and are free.

Geographical occurrence and way of life

The representatives of the family are spread around the world.

Systematics

The family was set up in 1953 by Frederick Stratten Russell , the type genus is Rhopalonema Gegenbaur, 1854. The systematics given here follows the information from the World Hydrozoa Database . The family contains 16 genera and 34 to 36 species, making it the most extensive family in the order of the Trachymedusae .
