Ricardo Hausmann (* 1956 ) is a Venezuelan economist . He is Professor of Development Economics at Harvard University .

Life

Hausmann studied at the Cornell University first Engineering ( B.Sc. , 1977). From 1977–1981 he studied economics there ( MA , 1980, Ph.D. , 1981). 1981–1984 he was an assistant professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela . 1984–1985 worked for the Ministry of Planning and Coordination of Venezuela. 1985–1992 Hausmann taught at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración in Caracas . 1987–1988 he was an advisor in the reform commission COPRE and 1989–1991 advisor to the president of the Venezuelan central bank. 1988-1991 he was visiting scholar at St Antony's College . 1992–1993 he was Venezuela's Minister of State for Planning and Coordination, and he was also on the development committee of the World Bank and IMF . From 1994 to 2000, Hausmann was chief economist at the Inter-American Development Bank . Since 2000 he has been a professor at Harvard, and since 2005 also head of the Center for International Development .

Hausmann's research interests are economic growth , macroeconomic stability, international finance and the social dimensions of development. He has drawn up a plan for the reconstruction of a post-socialist Venezuela. Because of the years of mismanagement, he sees a need for a subsidy of at least 60 billion dollars.
