Ricardo Lara (born November 5, 1974 in Commerce , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Life

His parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico. Lara graduated from San Diego State University and the University of Southern California . From December 6, 2010 to November 30, 2012, Lara was a member of the California State Assembly, replacing Hector De La Torre . Lara has been a Senator in the California Senate since December 3, 2012, replacing Alan Lowenthal . In March 2017, Lara announced that he would be running for the office of California Insurance Commissioner in California. Lara is openly gay.
