Commerce is an industrial city in Los Angeles County , California with a population of 12,568 (as of the 2000 census ).
Geographical location
Commerce is bordered to the west by Vernon , to the northwest by Los Angeles , to the north by East Los Angeles, to the east by Montebello , to the south by Downey and Bell Gardens, and to the southwest by Maywood . The Los Angeles River forms parts of the southwestern city limits , the Rio Hondo delimits the city from Downey.
Commerce is located on the freeways Long Beach Freeway and Santa Ana Freeway . The Los Angeles Metro operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority also serves the place.
City history
The city was founded in 1960. In the 1970s and 1980s, in contrast to some nearby cities, Commerce was not a victim of de-industrialization , and numerous new industrial areas were created.
Demographics
The 2000 census found a population of 12,568 in 3,284 households and 2,686 families. The population density was 739 per km². 3377 residential units were counted in the city.
According to the census, the population was 44.76% whites, 0.78% African American, 1.58% American Indians, 1.08% Asian and 0.08% Pacific islanders as well as to 46.94% from members of other ethnic groups; 4.77% stated two or more ethnic groups. At 93.61%, the majority of the population gave Hispanic or Latino American ancestry.
Of the 3,284 households, 47.3% had children under the age of 18; 15.5% were single households. The average household size was 3.80 people, the average family size 4.17 people.
According to age group, the population was broken down as follows in 2000: 33.8% were under 18 years of age, 11.1% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.8% between 25 and 44 years of age, 16.1% between 45 and 64 years of age Years and 10.2% were 65 years or older. The median age was 28 years.
The median household income was US $ 34,040 ; the median family income was $ 36,572. The per capita income was $ 11,117. 15.4% of families and 17.9% of the population were below the poverty line.
