life and work

Antoniazzi was born in December 1853 as the sixth child of the violin maker and Ceruti pupil Gaetano Antoniazzi, from whom he also learned this craft. Riccardo Antoniazzi moved to Milan around 1870. He taught violin making with his father and brother Romeo Leandro Bisiach . With this, the Antoniazzis founded a test workshop for violin making in Milan. In 1880 Riccardo Antoniazzi went to Nice, probably to work for Nicolò Bianchi . In 1886 he returned to Milan.

Antoniazzi's instruments can be assigned to three creative periods. The first period up to around 1887/1888 includes the instruments of his apprenticeship with his father and his independent early development. During this time he built similar instruments as his father. His best and most creative time spanned the following years up to around 1904. During this time he mainly worked for Leandro Bisiach and developed his own distinctive style. Unfortunately, Antoniazzi fell into the shadow of Bisiach and did not sign many of his instruments from this creative period. From 1904 he worked for the company Monzino and Sons . In this phase he made very beautiful instruments, but he worked a little less carefully, especially with regard to the painting of the instruments. Today these instruments from the last phase in the market as well as in musical life are the best known from Antoniazzi.

Antoniazzi made a large number of violin models. Its paint was generally yellow-orange, sometimes dark red. He used four different labels including his trademark at Monzino . At the bottom of this trademark are his initials AR within a double circle that is partially covered by a cross.

Antoniazzi was considered to be a co-founder of the modern Milan violin making school . He had numerous students, including Ferdinando Garimberti and Gaetano Sgarabotto . Riccardo Antoniazzi died in Milan in November 1912.
