Riccardo Rognoni

Riccardo Rognoni Taeggio (* before 1550; † before April 20, 1620 in Milan ) was an Italian composer , violinist and flautist.

Life

Riccardo Rognoni lived in Milan and is the first known member of a well-known family of musicians from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He wrote one of the earliest known violin schools. He is credited with bringing the violin, which until then was considered a dance and street instrument, to the Lombard court. His two sons Francesco Rognoni and Giovanni Domenico Rognoni are among his most famous students .

The family was founded in 1605 by the art-loving King Sigismund III. Wasa of Poland, in whose service they were, ennobled and since then have been nicknamed Taeggio .

Filippo Picinelli (1604–1678) described him as an excellent string and wind instrument virtuoso.

Of his works, only his “Passengers” and one work from his Il primo libro della musica a due voci (Milan, 1598) are known today.
