Richard Schöne Society

The Richard Schöne Society for Museum History e. V. is an international scientific society that aims to promote scientific and cultural work on the basis of research into museum history and to support its public dissemination in order to enable the comparison of historical, social and cultural experiences. The society is politically and religiously neutral. (§ 2 of the statutes)

The company was founded on May 3, 1994 and is based in Berlin . It organizes scientific conferences and lectures on German and international museum history and also addresses a broader audience with public events and projects on museum history and museum policy issues. There are collaborations with researchers at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, the Humboldt University of Berlin , the Free University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin as well as institutions such as the Berlin City Museum Foundation , the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the German Historical Museum .

The chairman of the society is the art historian Dorothee Wimmer ; her predecessor was the art historian Tanja Baensch . The second chairman is the architecture critic and museum historian Nikolaus Bernau .

Surname

The association is named after the archaeologist and classical philologist Richard Schöne (1840-1922), who has been a specialist in the museum administration in the Prussian Ministry of Culture since 1872 and then since 1880 as the first general director of today's Berlin State Museums with a bourgeois background, liberal political orientation and academic Education whose growth and design has decisively shaped.
