Richard Martin West

Richard Martin West (* 1941 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish astronomer who worked at the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

West discovered numerous comets , including the spectacular Comet C / 1975 V1 (West) and the periodic comets 76P / West-Kohoutek-Ikemura and 123P / West-Hartley .

Between 1976 and 1986 he discovered a total of 40 asteroids , including the Trojans (2146) Stentor , (2148) Epeios and (20995) 1985 VY . West is co-discoverer (together with Hans-Emil Schuster ) of the Phoenix dwarf galaxy .

Since 1990 he has been a member of the Academia Europaea . The asteroid (2022) West is named after him.
