The Phoenix dwarf galaxy is an irregular dwarf galaxy in the constellation of the Phoenix , which was discovered by Hans-Emil Schuster and Richard Martin West in 1976 and was initially mistaken for a globular cluster . It is located about 0.44 M pc from Earth and belongs to the Local Group .

properties

The Phoenix dwarf galaxy has a star population of young stars in its central region , which move in an east-west direction and a population of mainly older stars in the outer regions of the galaxy , which move in a north-south direction. The star formation rate in the central region seems to be relatively stable throughout the evolution of the dwarf galaxy (Martínez-Delgado et al. 1999). In 1999 , St-Germain et al. an HI area of about 10 5 M directly west of the Phoenix dwarf galaxy. Its radial velocity is around −23  km / s and probably shows a gravitational coupling with the dwarf galaxy.
