The Carina dwarf galaxy , also known as ESO 206-G20 or PGC 19441 , is an early morphological type dwarf galaxy in the constellation Kiel des Schiff ( Latin Carina ). In the year 1977 she was awarded the UK Schmidt Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory al of the research group Cannon et. discovered.

properties

As one of the satellites of the Milky Way , the Carina dwarf moves away at a speed of around 230  km / s .

The galaxy seems to have formed several billion years after the other satellite galaxies in the Milky Way : its oldest stars are relatively young, less than 7 billion years old. This makes it a relatively youthful galaxy compared to the Milky Way, which at 13.6 billion years is almost as old as the universe itself.

Despite this somewhat shorter evolution, the Carina dwarf galaxy probably has a complex history of star formation ; at least three distinguishable star formation phases could be identified for them.

Because of its proximity to the Milky Way, it is so violently deformed by tidal forces that it pulls a tail of gas , dust and stars behind it.
