Segue 1 is a small dwarf galaxy orbiting the Milky Way , possibly also a globular cluster .

Although Segue 1 has only a few visible stars , it exerts a thousand times stronger gravity and thus has a thousand times higher mass than its luminosity would suggest. It is therefore one of the most extreme examples of galaxy with dark matter .

The galaxy is one of many nearly invisible galaxies discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey . These galaxies contain about 100 to 1000 times as much dark matter as visible matter. In contrast, the Milky Way contains about ten times as much dark matter as visible matter.
