Richard Nagel (ornithologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Nagel (born October 10, 1857 in Bremen , † November 28, 1941 in Berlin ) was a German ornithologist and painter of the bird world and landscapes of northwest Germany.

He was born as the eleventh child of the theologian and pastor of Bremen Wilhelm Nagel and grandson of the doctor in the Franckische Stiftungen Halle Christian Nagel. He completed a commercial apprenticeship and ran a coffee business with a friend between 1890 and 1916. Both also dealt with high bikes. He is credited with founding the first bicycle shop in Bremen. In 1884 Richard Nagel received a permit from the police department to “drive into the Bürgerpark with his Velocipede”.

As a hunter, he used his drawing talent to paint shot birds in oil. In landscape photographs, which he made himself, he painted birds watching. Today these pictures are considered to be unique documents of the flora and fauna of northwest Germany. The Bremen ornithologist Gustav Hartlaub advised him against this background to create a table of the birds of Northwest Germany, which with 741 paintings of 335 birds has remained unpublished.

The digital copies from Richard Nagel's estate in the holdings of the Bremen State Archives have not yet been published.
