The Rideau River ( French Rivière Rideau ) is a river in southern Ontario whose source is north of Upper Rideau Lake and which flows into the Ottawa at Rideau Falls .

Its length is 146 km. The catchment area covers 3800 km². The mean discharge is 35 m³ / s.

The river was given the name Rideau ( French word for "curtain") because of the view of the waterfall at its mouth .

The Rideau Canal runs from the city of Ottawa to Kingston on Lake Ontario . It was created by connecting the two rivers Rideau River and Cataraqui River . The Rideau River branches off the canal at Hog's Back Falls in Ottawa.

Every year at the beginning of spring, parts of the ice sheet on the river between Billings Bridge and Rideau Falls are blasted away with explosives in order to reduce the risk of flooding in the lower reaches of the river.
