Rhodesian Ridgeback

In domestic dogs, Ridgeback is the name for a breed that has a strip of fur running in the middle of the back ( "ridge" ), the direction of growth ( line ) of which is opposite to that of the surrounding fur. Three dog breeds are named after this characteristic:

Medically, the ridge is a mild form of spina bifida (open back) that is predisposed to a dermal sinus . This can result in complications as skin infections can spread along the sinus to the spinal cord .
