List of domestic dogs

The Phu Quoc Ridgeback (Vietnamese: Chó Phú Quốc, Phu Quoc dog) is a breed of dog from the island of Phú Quốc , Kiên Giang Province in Vietnam .

General

The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is one of three dog breeds worldwide with a "ridge" on its back. This means that the hair grows on the back along the spine in the opposite direction to the rest of the fur. The other two breeds are the Thai Ridgeback from Thailand and the Rhodesian Ridgeback from South Africa and Zimbabwe . The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is the smallest of the three Ridgebacks and usually reaches around 15 to 20 kg. Since the dog was included in the Larousse editions , the breed has also received more attention in the western world. In Vietnam itself, the breed is considered rare, and according to the Vietnam Kennel Association, there are only around 700 pure-bred , recognized Phu Quoc Ridgebacks. Due to the rarity of the breed, the animals can only rarely be entered in dog shows, as the judges cannot assess the breed-typical characteristics.

In 2013, however, the Hanoi Dog Show was won by a Phu Quoc Ridgeback named Ven.

Breeding history

Native to Vietnam, the breeding history of the Phu Quoc Ridgebacks has not been carefully recorded. Enthusiasts and a handful of experts argue that all three Ridgeback breeds are said to have originally come from either Asia or Africa . However, there is a lack of scientific evidence here. It is believed that the dogs, like their relatives from Thailand, were primarily used as hunting and guard dogs as well as companions and for pulling small carts.

Appearance and racial characteristics

The ridge, a clear racial feature

According to ancient residents of Phu Quoc Island, the original colors of the Phu Quoc Ridgebacks are yellow, black, striped and spotted, with pure black and pure yellow specimens with black eyes, toes and black-spotted tongue being the most valued and also most expensive animals. By mixing with other dog breeds, the animals are now available in far more colors.

The spotted tongue is one of the main characteristics of the Phu Quoc Ridgeback.

The ideal image includes long legs and neck and a small head with a relatively long snout. The ears are long and thin and the tongue has black spots. The narrow, tapered belly and straight legs in conjunction with the webbed paws make the Phu Quoc Ridgeback an excellent runner and swimmer. The dogs are also good climbers and occasionally even climb trees. One of the most important features is the sword-shaped "ridge" on the back, which enables the animal to appear larger and more aggressive when necessary. There are only a few purebred Phu Quoc Ridgebacks on the island of Phu Quoc, as they have mixed with naturalized races in many places. The animals are particularly known for their ability to run faster and jump higher than other comparable dog breeds.

character

The Phu Quoc Ridgeback has a friendly and extremely curious nature. The animals love to run and hunt, but also have a strong need to guard their respective property. If necessary, they do this loudly. The breed of dog is very loyal, loving, and obedient. The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is easy to train due to its natural curiosity and the joy of learning. If mutual trust and respect between the dog and its owner form the basis of a good relationship, the animal will learn all sorts of tricks with pleasure.

Known health problems

In general, the Phu Quoc Ridgeback is known as a healthy and robust breed. Occasionally, however, hip misalignments or various joint problems can occur. The dog can live up to 16 years old, which is remarkable considering its country of origin, where veterinary medicine is a rarity. The main problem is transportation from Phu Quoc Island to the mainland. Parvovirus infection can easily occur due to missing or often falsified vaccines .
