The ridgway owl ( Aegolius ridgwayi ) is a species of the genus Aegolius , which is distributed exclusively in Central America , from southern Mexico to the southeast of Costa Rica and western Panama .

The bird reaches a height of 17 to 19 centimeters and is particularly similar to the North American owl ( Aegolius acadicus ). It is dark brown on the top and pale brown on the underside, but differs from the saw owl in the lack of noticeable spots and stripes. Very little is known about the ecology and way of life.

The species status of the ridgway owl is controversial, there is also the possibility that it is a subspecies of the saw owl.
