Rieder meal
The Rieder meal ( also Riedersche meal ) denotes one by radiologists Hermann Rieder named Kontrastmittelbrei to represent the gastrointestinal passage .
In 1904 Rieder published the first meaningful radiological monocontrast examinations on living people. To do this, he swallowed the contrast medium and took x-rays of the stomach and intestines .
Rieder originally mixed 350 g of semolina with 50 g of bismuth carbonate to make his contrast medium porridge . Later, the less dangerous barium sulfate was used instead of bismuth carbonate .
