A Riegelberg is a rock mountain in a glacial valley. They either represent hard rock fragments ( Petrovariance ) carved out by the glacier or arise from uneven bolt chipping . Riegelberge occur mainly on valley steps of trough valleys . There the mountains were carved out of the rock step by later glacial or fluvatile erosion (breakthroughs) and exposed on both sides - in the sense of a summit formation. They are to be distinguished from the concept of the Inselberg in a valley (whereby an Inselberg can represent an erosion remnant of a Riegelberg) as well as from the Spornberg in the inner corner of two valleys (whereby the Riegelberg can be the continuation of a spur formation).
