Rifat (Bible)
In the Old Testament, Rifat is the second oldest son of Gomer , a grandson of Jafet and a great-grandson of Noah . It appears in the table of nations in Gen 10.3 EU and 1 Chr 1.6 EU .
Surname
The Hebrew name רִיפַ֖ת rifat only appears in Gen 10.3, whereas in 1 Chr 1,6 the name דִיפַ֖ת difat appears . Since the Septuagint reproduces the name as ριφαθ rifat in both places , it is likely that this is also the original form of the name. The variant difat is then to be regarded as a spelling mistake because of the strong similarity of the letters ר Resch and ד Daleth .
Biblical report
Two brothers of the Rifats are mentioned in the table of nations, Ashkenaz and Togarma . The section of the Table of Nations Gen 10.1–4a EU , in which Rifat and his brothers are mentioned, belongs to the priestly scriptures .
