Rigets flag
Rigets Flag ( German flag of the empire ) is a Dannebrog flag with a swallowtail and is hoisted as the official symbol of the state sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark , since 1788 on the Sixtus Bastion in the port of Copenhagen .
history
Until 1784 Riget's flag waved on a flag bastion at Kronborg Castle on the Oresund . Foreign ships saluted as they passed. When the royal court moved to Copenhagen, it was to be hoisted on the Copenhagen Castle . However, implementation problems arose. The flag was also difficult to see from the sea.
By royal decree of June 16, 1788, a new location was determined on the Sixtus Bastion on Nyholm. Riget's flag was first hoisted here on August 15, 1788 . At the same time, a separate flagging order came into force. The original location in the northeast of the bastion was abandoned in 1938 because the shipyards on Refshaleø restricted visibility. On April 2, 1938, the flag was flown for the first time at its current location. The bastion, flagpole and salute cannons were thoroughly renovated in 2011.
During the self-sinking of the Danish fleet on August 29, 1943, Rigets flag was overtaken by marines . It was not raised again until the day of liberation from German occupation on May 5, 1945.
protocol
The protocol deviates from the normal rules for the use of the Danish flag. It is hoisted at 8 o'clock in the morning or at sunrise, if this takes place after 8 o'clock. At sunset, whatever the time, the flag is lowered. A single gun salute accompanies the hoisting and retrieving.
Flags of mourning at half-mast are only regularly carried out on Good Friday and when the ruling monarch dies, i.e. not on April 9, the day of the German invasion in 1940. In exceptional cases, the king or queen ordered mourning flags: Christian X. because of the forced extradition of six Torpedo boats to Hitler's Germany on February 5, 1941, Margrethe II. 1996 in honor of Admiral Hans Jørgen Garde and his fellow travelers who were killed in a plane crash in the Faroe Islands.
