Rings from Tivla

Tivla near Baltasound

The Rings of Tivla , ( English Rounds of Tivla ), lie on Unst , the northernmost of the Scottish Shetland Islands . They belong to presumably Bronze Age cremation graves .

On a slope near the hamlet of Crussafield, near Baltasound, there are three systems, only one of which has its former shape. Three low concentric walls, with two shallow trenches in between, surround a stone pavement about twelve meters in diameter. The rings themselves are 27, 36 and almost 48 m in diameter. The two destroyed rings apparently had a similar internal structure. Above this group of rings are three round burial mounds , one of which contains a stone box .

Similar facilities can be found at the Haltadans of Fetlar and on Gray Coat Hill in Teviotdale , Roxburghshire .
