Ringelpiez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ringelpiez (spelling also Ringelpietz ) is a colloquial, sloppy term for a happy, sociable get-together with dance . It is often used as part of the phrase Ringelpiez with touch .

Word origin and language use

According to Duden, the name Ringelpiez is "originally North German, Berlin" and actually means "dance and song". The second part of the word probably comes from Slavonic ; the old Polish verb pieć means “to sing”. According to the Etymological Dictionary by Wolfgang Pfeifer , Ringelpie (t) z was initially a name for a round dance (see Ringelreihen ) with singing. The word then entered colloquial language with the more general meaning “dancing pleasure” or “happy, high-spirited get-together”.

The phrase "Ringelpiez you can touch" was already in use in the 19th century. It is actually tautological , since the dancers hold hands in the typical dance postures of the couple dance and usually also touch the back or shoulder of the dance partner. The touch is explicitly pronounced and somewhat suggestively or disparagingly called "touching", which gives the phrase a crude character.

Dance events (or, in a broader sense, group activities) that are perceived as childish and boring or at which a frivolous mood arises can be called Ringelpiez or “Ringelpiez with touch”. The term Ringelpiez is also used figuratively, so that, for example, companies or nations are represented as participants in a "Ringelpiez".

In 2017/18 a series of parties for the LGBTI community took place in Leipzig under the motto “Ringelpiez”. The 1. FC Köln brought in the season 2018/19, a carnival-shirt with striped pattern on the market and chose for the motto "Ringelpiez zom Aanpacke" ( kölsch for "Ringelpiez to touch").

The expression “Ringelpiez without touching” is occasionally used as the linguistic counterpart to “Ringelpiez with touching”, for example as an allusion to the contact restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic .
