The Rinterzelt

The Rinterzelt was a tent-shaped, roofed waste treatment facility of the City of Vienna on Rautenweg in the 22nd district near the Rautenweg landfill . The facility became known above all for its architecturally striking conical tent-shaped hall construction. It had a diameter of 170 m and a height of 68 m.

history

The company RINTER AG ( R ecycling Inter national) built 1980-81 on the site of an automatic sorting system for waste with the tent-shaped roof. It was named "Rinterzelt". The plant was unsuccessful and was therefore closed in 1983. In 1986, the facility or tent was re-operated as a hub for separate garbage collection by the City of Vienna and became the venue for the manure festival of the Vienna City Council. Further buildings were added in 1989.

In June 2016 it was announced that the roof of the Rinter tent, made of wooden trams and sheet metal skin, would be demolished in 2018 due to its desolate condition and high repair costs and replaced by several smaller structures. It was announced that rubbish would be brought from Vienna to Graz by train to be sorted at ARA .

The plastic waste sorting system was sold to a Mexican company for a high six-digit euro amount in 2017 and temporarily stored by Vienna on an area of the MA48 in Vösendorf. The round shape, unsuitability as a modern workplace and fire protection deficiencies are also cited as arguments for the demolition of the tent building.

After the facility had been cleared from the tent, the roof of the Rinter tent was blown up on October 17, 2019, and a cloud of dust rising from the top of the cone was reminiscent of a volcanic eruption. The central tubular concrete column could not be blown up because there was not enough space to fall, but should be broken off by nibbling with a lifted excavator. The columns standing in a circle, also made of reinforced concrete, are also to be demolished conventionally. A new company building was erected in advance, and a second will follow after it has been completely demolished.
