Name story

It is considered to be the oldest family in the Kienberg community, as the name was first mentioned on August 15, 1288. In this document, a Heinrich Ribstein from Kienberg, in the hostel of Wölflinswill by the Lords of Kienberg and Zielemp, is granted prospecting rights for an ore mine in Wölflinswil.

The origin of the name is unclear, but there is a legend about it. In this legend it is said that the sex goes back to a foundling who was found on a millstone (friction stone). This legend is not so absurd, as the name was spelled with B until the 18th century. Then for a while with a P (Ripstein) and only in the 19th century is the spelling with two P, as the name is spelled today.
