Riquet with the forelock (French original title: Riquet à la houppe ) is a fairy tale by Charles Perrault . It appeared from 1697 in the Contes de ma Mère l'Oye collection .

A fairy gives the ugly Riquet with his head a great spirit, which also passes over to the one he once loves. The older king's daughter of the neighboring kingdom is stupid but beautiful, which the fairy also expands to include those who please her. But she soon loses her rank at court to the ugly but spirited twin sister. On a sad walk in the forest, she meets Riquet with the head, who she already knows from pictures and gives her a year to marry him. She promises and immediately has a spirited conversation with him. Everyone at court is amazed at her, who soon can hardly make up her mind in front of suitors. When she was walking in the forest again, she saw cooks under the forest floor preparing Riquet's wedding with her head, because the year is up tomorrow. When he walks towards her, she first wants to speak out, but he convinces her: It also makes him beautiful. The narrator leaves open whether it was really the magic of the fairy or love, and concludes with the moral: love makes beautiful and witty, and weighs more heavily than natural beauty.

Explanations

Perrault probably invented the fairy tale himself, but may have found inspiration in Straparola and Basile . Doris Distelmaier-Haas states that this is where he detaches himself most from the instructive narrative tone, brings longer dialogues and communicates courtly ideals of his time. The stereotypical praise of spirit and love works like a satire of bourgeois values.
