Risa Wataya ( Japanese 綿 矢 り さ , Wataya Risa , civil: Risa Yamada ( 山田 梨 沙 , Yamada Risa ); born February 1, 1984 in Kyōto ) is a Japanese writer.

At the age of 19 she received the Akutagawa Prize for her novel Keritai Senaka and, together with Hitomi Kanehara, is one of the most successful authors of the younger generation. The German translation of the title by Sabine Mangold was published by Carlsen Verlag in February 2007 under the title Behind your door made of paper . An English translation, although a bestseller in Japan, was only published in 2015 by the small publisher One Peace Books in New York City. Her debut novel Insutōru was filmed in 2004 for Kawaisō da ne? she received the Ōe Kenzaburō Prize in 2012 .

In 2011 she went on a reading tour in Germany at the invitation of the Harbourfront Literature Festival Hamburg.
